Sadbh (modern Irish Sadhbh; pronounced SIVE, rhymes with “five”) is a feminine Gaelic name from Old Irish Sadb/Sáeb, a word meaning “sweet, good, gentle” and by extension “noble.” Spellings include Sadbh, Sadhbh (now standard), and the early medieval Sadb; the usual anglicized form is Sive, popular in Ireland. Rare Latinized forms such as Sabia occur in medieval records.

Bearers appear throughout early Irish literature and annals. In Fenian lore, Sadhbh is the enchanted beloved of Fionn mac Cumhaill and mother of the poet Oisín, a tale that kept the name in oral tradition.
