Sadbh is Irish in Origin.
Sadbh (modern Irish Sadhbh; pronounced SIVE, rhymes with “five”) is a feminine Gaelic name from Old Irish Sadb/Sáeb, a word meaning “sweet, good, gentle” and by extension “noble.” Spellings include Sadbh, Sadhbh (now standard), and the early medieval Sadb; the usual anglicized form is Sive, popular in Ireland. Rare Latinized forms such as Sabia occur in medieval records.
Bearers appear throughout early Irish literature and annals. In Fenian lore, Sadhbh is the enchanted beloved of Fionn mac Cumhaill and mother of the poet Oisín, a tale that kept the name in oral tradition. Several queens and noblewomen of the 10th–12th centuries also carried it, and a daughter of High King Brian Boru is recorded as Sadb. The name waned under anglicization but revived in the 20th century, aided by John B. Keane’s play Sive (1959), and is now widely used in Ireland.
