Greek Girl Names
Greek female names come from Ancient and Modern Greek. They commonly use feminine endings in -a, -e (eta), and -ia, reflecting Greek grammatical gender. Many are formed from classical vocabulary, mythology, and theophoric elements, as in Agape, Aella, Adrasteia, Adonia, Adelpha, and Afina. Diminutive or variant endings such as -ina also appear in modern forms.
Traditional practice in Greece often names the first daughter after the paternal grandmother, and many girls receive names of Orthodox saints with a corresponding name day. Today there is renewed use of ancient and mythological female names alongside standard saint-based names, with spelling varying by transliteration (for example, Afrodita versus Aphrodite).
