Its first element, uodal, denotes inherited property, patrimony, or ancestral land; the second, rīh or rīhhi, belongs to the Germanic word-family of rule and royal power. The compound therefore has the literal sense of heritage-ruler or ruler of an inherited estate.

The name was borne by Alamannic nobles such as the Udalriching counts before its high-medieval association with Saint Ulrich of Augsburg, bishop and defender of the city against Magyar attacks; his papal canonization in 993 strengthened its ecclesiastical currency. Czech Oldřich, Slovak Oldrich, Scandinavian Ulrik, Polish Ulryk, and Slovene Urh reflect regional adaptation.
