Quashey is Akan in Origin.
Quashey is an Afro-Caribbean form of the Akan (Twi/Fante) male day name Kwasi/Kwesi, meaning “born on Sunday.” During the transatlantic slave trade, many enslaved Akan people carried their day names to the Caribbean, where English speakers rendered them phonetically as Quashie, Quashey, Quashe, and Quacy/Quacey. The parallel feminine form in plantation records is Quasheba (from Akosua).
From the 18th to early 20th centuries, Quashie/Quashey appears widely in Jamaican and other British West Indian documents and folklore; over time it was also used generically - and sometimes pejoratively - for an enslaved or rural Black man, which led to decline in everyday use. Today the spelling Quashey is rare but may be chosen to honor Akan heritage, with modern Ghanaian counterparts Kwasi and Kwesi, and diaspora variants Kwesi, Kweisi, and Quacey.
Quashey turns up in none of the birth registries or name datasets we cover. Such a name is generally either rare, regional or traditional, or a brand-new coinage. Either way, it's a name very few children share.
