Recorded as both Nest and Nesta, it was borne by Nest ferch Rhys (c.1085-1136), famed in Welsh chronicles as wife of Gerald of Windsor and reputed consort of Henry I, helping to fix the name in Wales and the Marches.
Variants and related forms include Welsh Nest; Agnes and Agneta; Inés/Inês (Inez); and English Annis, with diminutives Ness, Nessa, and Netta. Note that Irish Nessa is etymologically separate despite modern overlap.
