Keio is Japanese in Origin.
Keio is a Japanese-derived given name formed from the elements Kei (慶, “jubilation; felicitations”) and Ō (応/應, “response; support”), the compound written 慶応 or 慶應 and traditionally romanized Keiō. Without diacritics it appears as Keio. The sense evokes an “auspicious response” or “joyful accord.”
Keiō names the final era (1865–1868) of the Tokugawa shogunate, and it survives prominently in Keio University’s name, founded by Yukichi Fukuzawa, which helped popularize the spelling abroad. As a given name, Keio is modern and rare, typically unisex and chosen for its crisp sound and upbeat kanji. Variants and spellings include Keiō, Keioh, and Keiou; diminutives or related forms include Kei and, by association, Keito. Note that Keo (without i) is a separate Khmer/Lao name meaning “jade; crystal.”
