Egbert is Germanic in Origin.
Egbert is the later Middle English and modern form of Old English Ecgberht, also written Ecgbert. Its root language is Anglo-Saxon Old English within the West Germanic name stock. The compound joins ecg, blade-edge or sword-edge, with beorht, bright, shining, famous; the final cluster softened as the name passed into post-Conquest English. Literally, it denotes a bright edge, especially of a weapon.
Early medieval records place Ecgberht among Kentish, Northumbrian, and West Saxon elites, including kings of Kent and Wessex, and churchmen such as Ecgberht of Ripon and Ecgbert of York. Continental forms, notably Ekbert and Eckbert, appear in Saxon and later German noble or ecclesiastical contexts. In England the name became uncommon after the Norman Conquest, when French and biblical names displaced much native aristocratic naming; antiquarian interest helped revive Egbert in the nineteenth century. Modern use is sporadic, with Dutch, German, British, and American bearers.
| Ecgberht of Kent Egbert, also known as Ecgberht I, is best known as a 7th-century king of Kent who ruled from 664 to 673 after succeeding his father, Eorcenberht. He may have still been a child when he became king, since his mother, Seaxburh, was recorded as serving as regent after Eorcenberht died in 664. | Ecgberht I of Northumbria Egbert, better known as Ecgberht I, is most famous for being a 9th-century king of Northumbria. He died in 873, but because this period of Northumbrian history is so poorly recorded, very little is known about his life or reign. | Ecgberht II of Northumbria Egbert II is best known as a king of Northumbria in the late ninth century. Very little is known about his reign, and surviving historical records about him are scarce. |
